Swimmin' in it!
Intro to swimwear workshops. This is a two part workshop with the option to take one or both classes. You do not need to take workshop one before workshop 2. However, if both are booked they will build on each other. If you’d like to take both, we suggest booking both together. This way your spot in both workshops is secured.
Workshop part 1:
March 20 @ 6-8 pm
Workshop part 2:
March 27 @ 6-8 pm
Please fill out the participation waiver before coming to class:

This introductory swimwear sewing class focuses on handling technical fabrics and specialized elastic to create durable, water-ready garments. You can expect to learn the following skills:
Fabric and Pattern Preparation
Material Selection: Identifying appropriate nylon and spandex blends and understanding 4-way stretch and recovery.
Measuring and Sizing: Taking accurate body measurements to calculate stretch percentage and select the correct pattern size based on negative ease.
Precise Cutting: Techniques for cutting slippery fabrics in a single layer using a rotary cutter and weights to ensure the direction of greatest stretch (DOGS) is aligned correctly.
Machine Setup and Basics
Specialized Tools: Choosing and installing the correct type of needles and using specialized threads
Stitch Selection: Configuring a standard machine for zigzag or three-step zigzag stitches, and/or learning basic serger operation for secure, stretchy seams.
Construction Techniques
Elastic Application: Mastering the sewn-and-turned method for swim elastic, including how to evenly stretch the elastic (not the fabric) to prevent wavy edges.
Lining and Support: Techniques for attaching swim lining, power mesh, or pre-formed foam cups for structural integrity.
Seam Finishing: Methods for finishing edges so they stay flat against the skin during movement.
Troubleshooting
Heat Management: Pressing with or without heat
Stitch Testing: Practicing on fabric scraps to check tension and ensure seams won't pop when stretched.
